Queen Elizabeth I’s Biography

Who was Queen Elizabeth I?

The famous Queen was born on 7 September 1533 and died on 24 March 1603. She was Queen of England and Queen of Ireland from 17 November 1558 until she died. Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. The famous King Henry VIII was her father. But, the life of Elizabeth I did not begin as a princess since she was not wanted by her father. He wanted a son. Her mother was Anne Boleyn whom was sentenced to execution three years after her birth. Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Her brother, Edward VI, cut her out of the succession. However, in 1558, Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister, the Catholic Mary I, and she became Queen of England. Under her reign, England prospered and entered the Golden Age.

It was expected that Queen Elizabeth would marry, but despite lots of petitions from parliament, she never did. The reasons for this choice are unknown, and they have been much debated. As she grew older, Elizabeth became famous for her virginity, and a cult grew up around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day. She earned her title as the Virgin Queen, as you will read about in every biography of Queen Elizabeth I.
