LMS Online Courses Make the Most of Web 2.0 Tools

LMS online coursework aids students in their development of strong independent study skills, and teaches them how to motivate themselves. But something many people don’t realize is that e-learning has shifted from an independent study to an interactive experience.

It’s a known fact that the teaching style of an educator or trainer can make or break a class. Students’ degree of interest in whatever the subject may be can be lowered by an uninspired teaching style. In the same way, an engaging professor or trainer can give life to even the simplest or dullest subject.

What makes the latter situation even more exciting is often the space allowed for student collaboration and interaction with the learning material. This pedagogical practice is being valued and utilized to a greater extent in the e-learning world. Almost four centuries ago, John Milton said: “Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience.” Often what makes college and university classrooms so engaging is that students are freer to dissent and debate.

Although some instructors and professors in higher education classrooms continue to dispense information and maintain a traditional classroom format, online classrooms are becoming more interactive and collaborative.

Many course topics, of course, aren’t suitable for classroom discussion. For example, there may not be a great need for student interaction in calculus class. But for many online courses, space for student discussion is in fact suitable. Student-led dialogue can help students formulate ideas and familiarize themselves with the learning content in a way that no singular instructor can achieve.

E-learning doesn’t mean solitary learning anymore. With LMS programs and Web 2.0 tools, learners can “utter” and “argue freely according to conscience” just as Milton suggested was a basic human need. Wikis, social networks, and discussion forums are just a few ways in which learners can interact with their peers and with the learning content in an efficient, convenient, and simple manner.

They also allow for more democratic and sophisticated debating, in which shy students have a voice and those who typically require time to develop points and counterpoints are given that time. Online tools, combined with a robust LMS online course, allow students a comfortable space to interact with the learning content and discuss material in a well-developed and thoughtful way.
