How Learning a Foreign Language Helps Your Kids

Many states have added a foreign language to their graduation requirements. Of course it is important to be proficient in English, but learning another language aids in achievement throughout life.

It’s not easy for many students to learn another language. It doesn’t come overnight, but if they stick with it, most people will achieve a minimum proficiency. Giving students a choice of languages is helpful. Students can learn French learn Spanish or Latin in most schools, but some schools offer Russian, German, or even Chinese.

So, why study another language?

Research shows that learning a second language can improve your grades in English class? That may not surprise you, but this might – it also improves math skills. In addition, it improves:

– creativity
– communication and listening skills
– complex problem solving

Better Standardized Test Scores

Much research had demonstrated that foreign language learners consistently outperform others on standardized tests. According to the College Board, which administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), students who completed at least four years of a foreign language showed improved performance of at least 100 points on each section of the SAT compared to students who took a half year or less.

Other studies relate bilingual proficiency with higher scores on tests of both verbal and nonverbal intelligence.

Study of a foreign language increases the college admissions rate. Students are likely to earn better grades in college and more likely to graduate.

Learning a Second Language Enhances Career Opportunities

There are many ways knowing a second language can benefit your career. A growing number of businesses work closely with people in foreign countries, both within their own company, or with other companies or governments. Workers are necessary who know foreign languages and comprehend different customs.

There are lots of Americans whose main language is not English. In order to communicate with a wide range of people, many professionals will need to speak a second language. Some of these include doctors and nurses, social workers, police and firefighters, hotel managers, etc. Other areas where knowing a second language is either helpful or necessary include government, the military, law, sales and marketing, travel and hospitality, teaching, translation and communications.

Better Understanding Of The World

The world seems to be shrinking faster all the time. Even America is becoming increasingly multicultural and multiethnic.

Understanding another language teaches respect for other cultures. Studies have even found that foreign language learners are less biased against the differences among people. Being able to interact with other human beings benefits all countries and increases world security.

So now you know that there really are many good reasons to learn to speak French speak Spanish or any other language.
