2 Helpful Systems Used To Teach Kids How To Read

There are many children these days who do not read as well as they could. Children from the United States are now near the bottom in international tests of knowledge in math and science. Often the methods used for teaching children to read these days are simply not effective.

Standardized test scores for verbal ability are hitting historic lows. Almost eleven millions Americans can be classified as functionally illiterate. Learning how to read is a crucial step for other types of knowledge. There is educational software on the market today that can help children get a head start on their reading skills. A student who can read has access to a host of other subjects. Without the ability to read children cannot study the textbooks designed to teach them about other subjects. A child without the ability to read will always get left behind. There are so many things in life that demand good reading skills for success.

There are two methods that are primarily used to teach children how to read. These methods are the whole word method and the phonics method. Both of these strategies have both advantages and disadvantages. The phonics method is probably the best known method of teaching children to read. With this method the alphabet is memorized along with the sound that each letter makes. Then students are taught to string the sounds together in order to read words. One of the disadvantages of this method is that students sometimes get bored learning their letters and give up. Additionally they may get so caught up in sounding out a word that they lose its meaning.

When using the whole word method children are instructed to memorize and recognize whole words. Rather than learning to sound words out children are taught to memorize whole words. This method was created as a way to teach deaf children to read and is still effective when children do not have the ability to sound words out.
